Learn what surfing and the Marx Brothers might have in common at the premiere of Keith Glassman's site-specific performance of Timeless: Marxist Dances at the Beach. Drawing on anecdotes about Marion Davies' famous parties with the cream of Hollywood's creative class, as well as the unique physical qualities of the Beach House site, Glassman began creating Timeless... in early March of this year as a part of his Artist Residency at the Beach House. The performance will take place outside and in various parts of the facility - please wear layers and sun protection as well as comfortable walking shoes.
Keith Glassman's works have brought direct, vital and thought provoking ideas and images to audiences across the U.S. as well as in Canada and Mexico. He began making dances soon after he started his dance training at San Diego State University as a post-bac student in the late 70s. He moved to New York and studied with, among others, Sara Rudner and Bessie Schonberg and performed in the companies of Kenneth Rinker, Bebe Miller and Catlin Cobb. He formed Keith Glassman & Dancers in 1989. He has received numerous awards and/or commissions for his work, including support from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, the Durfee Foundation, the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, Dancing In The Streets, the Maine Arts Festival and P.S. 1 The Institute for Art and Urban Resources. He has taught dance in private studios and universities in New York, California and Vermont and earned a MFA in Dance from the University of California, Irvine (1996). keithglassman.org
About the Artist Residency: In honor of Marion Davies’ own artistry and her support of artists, and to further the work of the City of Santa Monica to promote the arts, the City sponsors one Resident Artist for the Winter and one for the Spring semesters at the Beach House. The Resident shares their creative efforts with the public at intervals throughout their tenure, so please check back with us to reserve your seats to future events. Residencies explore various disciplines including visual arts, choreography, and music composition, among others. The Resident will be working out of a second floor office in the Marion Davies Guest House for the duration, and will hold public office hours, periodic talks, workshops and open rehearsals throughout their tenure.
